The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) is boosting support for the development of new drugs for pets.

The agency on Feb. 24 said it has approved seven new veterinary medicines since launching in 2024 a team exclusively for reviewing such drugs.

The domestic animal medicine industry has struggled with preparing data and designing clinical trials due to a complex review system for drug safety, efficiency and standards.

The APQA has pioneered a breakthrough by providing tailored consulting throughout the process of new drug development centered on the team. The focus is on stronger preclinical consultations and supporting clinical trial strategies to resolve technical difficulties in the sector.

The agency plans to strengthen its review capacity for cutting-edge biopharmaceuticals and treatments for rare and intractable diseases, which require relatively more complex and stricter review criteria than general pet drugs.

Guidelines to be developed this year will also systematize the criteria for assessing the safety and efficiency of such medicine.
