The UNESCO World Heritage Committee session slated for July in Busan has adopted an emblem inspired by the roof of Jongmyo Shrine in Seoul.

The Korea Heritage Service (KHS) on March 25 unveiled the symbol for use at the 48th session.

The emblem features the shape and colors of the tiled roof of the shrine's Jeongjeon Hall. The roof's distinctive curved lines, stretching right and left, represent the meaning of preserving national heritage including the ceremonial order and traditional architecture of the royal family of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) passed down for over six centuries in the heart of Seoul.

The KHS said, "Through the symbol of Jongmyo, which has a single roof, we seek to convey a message of connection, peace and cooperation to the world."

The shrine houses the spiritual tablets of Joseon kings and queens and the emperors and empresses of the Korean Empire (1897-1910) and hosts ancestral rituals.

As an intergovernmental organization for the discussion of registration, conservation and management of World Heritage sites, the UNESCO committee will host this year's session at the convention center BEXCO from July 19-29.
